In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukrainian drones targeted a police barracks in Chechnya during the early hours of Thursday, marking the second time this month that the site has come under attack. The regional head, Ramzan Kadyrov, reported that at approximately 12:55 am local time, a drone was downed over the building located in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya.
Kadyrov confirmed that as a result of falling debris from the intercepted drone, four guards sustained light injuries. He detailed the incident on his Telegram channel, noting that the drone exploded in mid-air, causing damage to the roof and breaking windows. The explosion also sparked a small fire, which was quickly controlled and extinguished by the authorities present at the scene.
The targeted building houses a police special forces unit named after Kadyrov’s late father, Akhmad Kadyrov, whose forces have been actively involved in military operations in Ukraine. Kadyrov, an ardent supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has dispatched thousands of Chechen troops to join the Kremlin’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.
In a broader context, the Russian defense ministry reported that overnight, it successfully intercepted a total of 16 Ukrainian drones. This included one drone over Chechnya, three in the neighboring North Ossetia region, and eight over Crimea, which Russia has annexed since 2014. The series of drone attacks and the defensive measures taken reflect the intensifying conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with each side ramping up military operations and engagements.
