MBDA Italia and Leonardo Collaborate on Laser-Based Counter-Drone System for Italian Navy

MBDA Italia and Leonardo have entered a significant memorandum of understanding aimed at co-developing a cutting-edge laser-based counter-drone system tailored for the Italian Navy. This strategic partnership outlines the creation of a dual-powered weapon system, comprising both light and high-energy laser capabilities designed to effectively intercept and neutralize nano- and micro-drones.

In this collaboration, MBDA Italia will take the lead as the design authority for the light laser variant of the system, which is intended for integration with existing naval platforms. This approach allows for an immediate enhancement of the Navy’s current capabilities without necessitating the acquisition of entirely new vessels. On the other hand, Leonardo will oversee the design of the high-powered laser system, which will be specifically developed for deployment on forthcoming naval assets.

According to MBDA, the technological division of responsibilities is clear: MBDA will focus on advancing the generation of high-power laser beams, while Leonardo will concentrate on developing systems for laser beam direction and target acquisition. This division of labor plays to the strengths of each company, ensuring that the final product will be both effective and reliable in the field.

While the primary objective of this initiative is to enhance maritime defense mechanisms, the memorandum also hints at potential future applications on land. The adaptability of this laser technology could provide significant benefits beyond naval operations, thereby extending the operational capacity of the system to combat current and evolving drone threats on different fronts.

The memorandum not only sets the stage for a robust technical partnership but also lays down a framework for the commercial aspects of the project, addressing the operational requirements of the Navy. It aims to define the solution in terms of feasibility, thus ensuring that it meets the specific needs and expectations of military stakeholders.

Furthermore, both companies have expressed commitment to leveraging their national supply chains to support the project. This collaboration will not only enhance the capabilities of the Italian Navy but also strengthen the domestic aerospace and defense industries through the utilization of local resources and expertise.

The initiative also complements MBDA’s existing portfolio of laser projects, which includes notable systems such as the Laser Weapon Demonstrator in Germany, the DragonFire program in the UK, and the HELMA-P solution being developed by the French firm CILAS, which has recently been absorbed by MBDA. This wider context underscores the growing importance of laser technology in modern warfare and the proactive steps being taken to ensure that military forces are equipped to handle emerging threats effectively.
