Kataeb Hezbollah Urges Iraqi Government to Send Troops to Support Syrian Forces Against Rebels

In a significant move amid escalating tensions in the region, Iraq’s powerful Iran-aligned Kataeb Hezbollah armed group has called on the Iraqi government to send military troops to Syria to assist the Damascus government in countering a rebel offensive. This appeal was made in a statement circulated on pro-Iranian Telegram channels late Monday, with additional excerpts shared on the group’s official website.

The current rebel offensive, which is primarily driven by Islamist factions, has resulted in the seizure of the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, raising alarm among political and security analysts in neighboring Iraq. In light of this development, a spokesman for Kataeb Hezbollah emphasized the urgency of action, asserting that the Iraqi government ought to take the initiative in deploying regular military forces in coordination with the Syrian government. He stated, “We believe these groups pose a threat to Iraq’s national security and the region.”

Kataeb Hezbollah, also known as Hezbollah Brigades, has a history of military engagement in Syria, having already fought alongside forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. Within Iraq, the faction operates as part of the Hashed al-Shaabi, a coalition that consists of former paramilitary forces now integrated into the country’s regular armed forces. While this coalition functions under the command of the Iraqi prime minister, it has consistently denied involvement in military ventures outside Iraq’s borders.

The backdrop to these developments includes Iraq’s painful history with the rise of the Islamic State group, which captured nearly a third of the country in 2014 before being defeated in 2017. This recent call from Kataeb Hezbollah reflects deep anxieties regarding the security landscape in Iraq, further complicating the nation’s position in regional geopolitics.

In response to the perceived threats, the Iraqi government announced on Monday that it has sent armored vehicles to strengthen security along its extensive 600-kilometer (370-mile) border with Syria. Additionally, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitoring group, reported witnessing the deployment of approximately 200 pro-Iranian Iraqi fighters into the Aleppo region of Syria to support government forces in their ongoing battles against the rebel factions.

These developments signal a potential escalation in military involvement and highlight the intricate web of alliances and hostilities that continue to shape the dynamics of the Middle East.
