New York City was rattled on Saturday evening when a Mexican Navy training vessel, Cuauhtรฉmoc, collided with the historic Brooklyn Bridge, damaging the shipโ€™s masts and raising immediate concerns about maritime safety and infrastructure vulnerability.

The 297-foot-long tall ship, on a goodwill and training mission with 277 people onboard, struck the bridge while sailing along the East River. The tops of its three masts hit the bridgeโ€™s underside, snapping off with an audible crash and partially collapsing upon impact. Eyewitnesses described the moment as chaotic, with some reporting seeing sailors suspended from rigging and scrambling to secure the vessel.

Video footage shared widely on social media captured the dramatic collision and subsequent rescue operation, showing emergency responders from the New York Fire Department and the Mexican Navy working to assist injured crew members. At least two individuals were seen being removed from the ship on stretchers, and another remained suspended in a harness for over 15 minutes before being safely rescued.

The Cuauhtรฉmoc, known as the โ€œAmbassador and Knight of the Seas,โ€ is a well-known symbol of Mexicoโ€™s naval heritage. Launched in 1982, the ship was on a 254-day voyage that included stops at 22 ports in 15 countries. It had arrived in New York on May 13 and was due to depart on May 17.

The Brooklyn Bridge, a vital artery connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn since 1883, carries over 100,000 vehicles and 32,000 pedestrians daily. City engineers are now assessing the bridge for any structural damage that may have occurred during the incident.

The Mexican Navy has confirmed damage to the vessel and stated that the health and condition of those onboard is under evaluation. Mexican consular officials are coordinating with local authorities to assist the crew.

As investigations continue, authorities are examining whether a navigational miscalculation, miscommunication, or failure to adhere to clearance protocols led to the collision. The incident has prompted questions about safety measures for tall ships entering New York Harbor and the adequacy of current clearance monitoring systems.

Tourists and residents near South Street Seaport fled the area as the incident unfolded, with many capturing the spectacle in real time. The investigation remains ongoing, with updates expected in the coming days.
