The government has approved an extension of tenure for Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, allowing him to continue in office until May 30, 2026, or until further orders.
The Ministry of Defence announced the decision following approval by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). General Chauhan, who also serves as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, was first appointed to the post on September 28, 2022, becoming the second CDS after General Bipin Rawat.
Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1981, General Chauhan has held several key operational and staff appointments in his distinguished career. He has been decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal for his exemplary service and leadership.
The extension ensures continuity in the top military leadership as India continues to focus on enhancing jointness, modernisation, and strategic preparedness across its armed forces.
