In a poignant reminder of the perils faced by India’s brave soldiers in the fight against terrorism, the Indian Army has recovered the body of a Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) commando from the snow-covered heights of Kokernag in South Kashmir. The elite soldier, belonging to the 5 Para SF unit, was found alongside his rucksack and personal weapon, underscoring his unwavering commitment to duty even in the face of extreme adversity.

The recovery comes three days after the trooper went missing during a high-stakes anti-terror operation in the volatile Pir Panjal range. Sources within the Army revealed that the mission targeted a group of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants suspected of infiltrating from across the Line of Control (LoC). Harsh weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, complicated the search efforts, raising fears of avalanches in the region.”

The soldier’s body was located intact with his equipment, a testament to his professionalism and the no-retreat ethos of the Para SF,” said a senior Army officer speaking on condition of anonymity. The Para SF, renowned for their maroon berets and rigorous selection process – often called the “toughest in the world” – are the spearhead of India’s counter-insurgency and special operations. The 5 Para SF battalion, in particular, has a storied history of daring raids and precision strikes in Jammu and Kashmir, including key roles in the 2016 surgical strikes.

The incident has cast a shadow over the operation, which has already seen intense exchanges of fire. While the Army has neutralized at least two militants so far, search teams continue to scour the rugged terrain for another soldier from the same unit who remains unaccounted for. Ground troops, supported by drones and canine units, are working round-the-clock, with aerial surveillance providing real-time intelligence to mitigate risks from potential avalanche zones.

The recovery operation highlights the dual threats of enemy combatants and nature’s fury that Indian troops endure in Kashmir. Local communities in Kokernag, long accustomed to such operations, have rallied to assist, providing logistical support amid the biting cold.

As the nation mourns, tributes are pouring in on social media. The soldier’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, but his legacy – one of courage in the line of fire – will inspire generations of warriors.
