A Russian source speaking to WION clarified, “No confirmation on such a development. It looks illogical for serious and professional observers, who trace big deals ahead between Russia and India. We don’t have such a level of cooperation with Pakistan which would make India feel uncomfortable.” The source further added that certain elements appear to be attempting to “compromise exceptionally promising and forward-looking cooperation, especially on the eve of high and highest level contacts.”

The clarification comes ahead of the annual India–Russia summit scheduled for December, during which Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to travel to India. Addressing the Valdai Forum last week, President Putin said he is “looking forward to my trip in early December and I highly await my meeting with my dear friend, our trustworthy partner, PM Modi.”

The upcoming summit alternates between the two nations; last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia for the annual meeting.

As part of the ongoing diplomatic engagements, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar visited Moscow earlier this year and held meetings with President Putin — highlighting the strength of the bilateral partnership. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is also expected to visit New Delhi ahead of the December summit to finalize preparations for the high-level meeting.

Defence, energy, and trade continue to form the three key pillars of India–Russia relations. Russia remains India’s largest defence supplier and a long-standing partner in technology transfer and joint development projects. Notable collaborations such as the S-400 Triumf air defence systems and the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile have strengthened India’s operational capabilities, with the latter proving its reliability during Operation Sindoor and earning export success with countries like the Philippines.

Bilateral trade between India and Russia has surpassed $60 billion, primarily driven by energy imports from Russia. Moscow has expressed interest in increasing imports of Indian pharmaceutical and agricultural products. Both nations are also working toward the conclusion of a Free Trade Agreement between India and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
