In a major boost to Indiaโs defence export ambitions, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has confirmed that Indonesia has officially expressed interest in acquiring the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system.
Singh made the announcement while addressing party workers in Lucknow, underscoring the rising global confidence in Indiaโs indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.
Indonesiaโs Interest Comes Amid Growing Global Demand
The development follows the successful dispatch of the first batch of BrahMos missiles from the new Lucknow production facility on 18 October.
The plantโthe first BrahMos assembly and testing unit in northern Indiaโwas inaugurated on 11 May and has since become fully operational, marking a major milestone for Indiaโs growing defence-industrial ecosystem.
A Strategic Boost for the Indo-Pacific
Indonesia joins a list of Southeast Asian nations evaluating BrahMos for their maritime deterrence needs. The Philippines signed the first export deal in 2022, while Vietnam and others have also held advanced discussions with India.
Defence experts believe Jakartaโs interest reflects its push to strengthen maritime security amid intensifying challenges in the South China Sea.
The BrahMos missileโrenowned for its Mach 2.8 speed, precision strike capability, and deployment across land, naval, and air platformsโoffers a credible stand-off weapon attractive to regional powers.
Lucknow Facility: A New Engine of Defence Manufacturing
Built at a cost of โน300 crore, the Lucknow unit is located in Bhatgaon, Sarojini Nagar, on 80 hectares of land allocated free of charge under the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor initiative.
The facility adheres to international standards and is equipped for large-scale assembly, integration, and testing of BrahMos systems, improving production timelines for both domestic and export orders.
Last month, Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off the first production batch, signalling a new era of high-technology defence manufacturing in the state.
Political and Strategic Highlights from Rajnath Singhโs Address
During his address, the Defence Minister also touched upon broader political themes. He urged party workers to uphold values of discipline and self-respect, drawing inspiration from Lord Ram as the โMaryada Purushottamโ.
He praised the NDAโs strong performance in the recent Bihar elections, attributing the victory to grassroots unity that transcended caste and religious divisions.
Singh also highlighted Indiaโs expanding global stature under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, crediting it to modernised defence forces, improved governance, and the commitment of party workers nationwide.
A Potential Breakthrough in IndiaโIndonesia Defence Ties
If negotiations progress, Indonesia could become the third foreign operator of BrahMos, further cementing Indiaโs role as a key defence exporter in the Indo-Pacific.
The move signals not only Jakartaโs strategic intent but also Indiaโs emergence as a reliable supplier of advanced missile systems amid shifting geopolitical realities.
