The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has handed over two major indigenous technologies to the Indian Army’s Corps of Military Engineering (CME) in Pune—the Camouflage Pattern Generation Software Sigma 4.0 (CPGS 4.0) and a full-scale Multispectral Signature Tank Mock-up.

These advanced systems are aimed at significantly boosting the Army’s training and operational capabilities in camouflage and deception—critical components for battlefield survivability in an era of rapidly evolving surveillance and sensor technologies.

Advanced Tools for Modern Battlefield Concealment

CPGS 4.0 is an upgraded software suite capable of generating optimised camouflage patterns across multiple spectral bands, including visible, infrared, and radar. The tool uses sophisticated algorithms to simulate diverse terrain, environmental conditions, and detection scenarios, enabling soldiers and engineers to tailor camouflage to specific operational needs.

The multispectral tank mock-up, designed to replicate the physical and spectral characteristics of an actual combat tank, offers hands-on exposure for trainees. It allows them to test and refine camouflage materials, paint schemes, and concealment strategies under controlled conditions that mirror real-world threats.

Enhancing Army Training and Survivability

The combination of advanced software and a lifelike mock-up addresses the growing challenge posed by modern detection technologies, including thermal imaging, UAV-based reconnaissance, and radar systems. Traditional camouflage measures have become increasingly insufficient, making multispectral deception an essential capability.

With this induction, the Army can now experiment with and validate concealment techniques more accurately, strengthening tactical planning and operational survivability.

Boost to Indigenous Innovation

The handover underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence technology and highlights the synergy between DRDO’s research ecosystem and the Army’s operational requirements. The tools will support both conventional and asymmetric warfare scenarios, ensuring troops are better equipped to counter advanced enemy sensors.

As emerging threats continue to reshape modern warfare, DRDO’s Sigma 4.0 suite and the multispectral tank mock-up are set to play a pivotal role in helping the Indian Army maintain tactical superiority on the battlefield.
