In a significant boost to Indiaโs defence preparedness, the Rajasthan High Court, Jodhpur, has cleared the way for the construction of a new Indian Air Force (IAF) airbase near the IndiaโPakistan border by dismissing all petitions challenging land acquisition for the project.
The proposed airbase, a Forward Composite Aviation Base (FCAB) near Sadulshahar tehsil in Sri Ganganagar district, is strategically located about 40 km from the Pakistan border. Once operational, it will enable Indian fighter aircraft to rapidly reach key Pakistani airbases such as Jacobabad, Bholari and Rahim Yar Khan in a contingency or wartime scenario.
Court Upholds National Security Priority
A bench led by Justice Dr Nupur Bhati rejected petitions filed by 58 farmers and landowners, who had opposed the acquisition of land for the project. In its reportable judgment, the High Court observed that the writ petitions were an attempt to derail a defence project of national importance on technical grounds.
The court categorically held that national security and public interest override individual interests, stating that no compromise can be made when the countryโs security is at stake.
No Procedural Lapses in Land Acquisition
After examining official records, the High Court noted that all statutory procedures had been duly followed. This included the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) public hearing, publication of newspaper notices, joint survey reports, the Tehsildarโs findings on objections, the Land Acquisition Officerโs speaking order, and the rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) survey. The court ruled that claims of procedural irregularities were unfounded.
Strategic Importance of the Airbase
The Sadulshahar airbase will become the second IAF station in Sri Ganganagar district, after Suratgarh Air Force Station. Currently, four air force stations are operational in districts along the RajasthanโPakistan border. The new base will significantly enhance rapid response, dispersal, and aerial dominance along the western front.
Part of Operation Sindoor
The project is being developed under a strategic initiative named Operation Sindoor, overseen by the Ministry of Defence. The site is located in Lalgarh Jatan and surrounding areas of Sadulshahar tehsil, involving the acquisition of about 130.349 hectares of private land and 2.476 hectares of government land in Chak 21 SDS.
Lessons From Recent Hostilities
Following Operation Sindoor, Pakistan had attempted drone and air attacks on Rajasthanโs border areas in May, including efforts to target Indian airbasesโattempts that were successfully thwarted. Indian airbases in Rajasthan played a crucial role during the operation, launching strikes against terrorist infrastructure across the border.
Strengthening Western Border Infrastructure
Since Operation Sindoor, the Ministry of Defence has accelerated efforts to upgrade and expand military infrastructure along the Rajasthan border. The new Sadulshahar airbase is a key pillar of this strategy, aimed at ensuring swift air operations, enhanced deterrence, and sustained air superiority along Indiaโs western frontier.
The High Courtโs decision removes the final legal hurdle, allowing the Indian Air Force to proceed with a project that significantly strengthens Indiaโs defensive and offensive air capabilities near the Pakistan border.
