Kulbir Singh became the first Agniveer to be decorated with a gallantry medal, marking a significant milestone for the Agnipath scheme. The honour was conferred during the Army Day Investiture Ceremony held in Jaipur on the eve of the 78th Army Day celebrations.

The medal was presented by General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, in recognition of Agniveer Kulbir Singh’s courage, presence of mind, and decisive action in a high-risk operational situation.

Bravery on the Line of Control

According to official details, the gallant act took place in January 2025, when Agniveer Kulbir Singh was deployed at a forward Indian Army post along the LoC. During his duty, terrorists attempted to infiltrate Indian territory under the cover of difficult terrain and low visibility.

Displaying exceptional alertness and courage, Kulbir Singh swiftly engaged the infiltrators using his Light Machine Gun (LMG). His accurate and sustained fire forced the terrorists to abandon their attempt and retreat back across the border, thereby preventing a potentially serious security breach.

His timely action not only safeguarded the post but also demonstrated combat readiness and professional excellence under extreme pressure.

Army Day Investiture Ceremony

The investiture ceremony was held on January 15, 2026, in Jaipur, where the Army Chief awarded Sena Medal (Gallantry) to 10 soldiers for acts of exceptional bravery. In addition, multiple Army units were also honoured with citations and appreciations, including 26 units recognised for their distinguished performance during Operation Sindoor.

Significance for the Agnipath Scheme

Agniveer Kulbir Singh’s decoration comes at a crucial time, as 2026 marks the completion of four years of service for the first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme, which was launched in 2022.

Under the scheme:

  • 25% of Agniveers will be selected for permanent induction as regular soldiers based on merit, discipline, and performance.
  • The remaining 75% will transition to civilian life, with reservation and employment opportunities in police forces, paramilitary organisations, and defence-related industries.

Kulbir Singh’s gallantry has strengthened confidence in the Agnipath model, proving that Agniveers are fully capable of performing frontline combat duties with courage and professionalism.

A New Chapter in Army History

The award of a gallantry medal to an Agniveer has been widely seen as a historic and symbolic moment, reinforcing the Indian Army’s emphasis on merit, courage, and operational excellence, irrespective of the mode of recruitment.

Agniveer Kulbir Singh’s act of bravery stands as an inspiration for young aspirants across the country and highlights the Indian Army’s enduring spirit of valour in defending the nation’s borders.
