Three days after retired Lieutenant General K S Mann succumbed to injuries sustained in a hit-and-run incident, Panchkula Police are yet to identify the vehicle or driver responsible for the fatal accident, officials said on Sunday.
The 83-year-old former Army officer was critically injured on Friday evening after being struck by an unidentified vehicle and was rushed to the Command Hospital, Chandimandir, where he passed away on Saturday. Despite sustained efforts, investigators have so far been unable to trace the accused, citing the absence of CCTV cameras at the exact accident site as a major hurdle.
Police officials stated that there was no surveillance coverage at the spot where Lt Gen Mann was hit, significantly hampering the investigation. โWe are scanning footage from CCTV cameras installed in surrounding areas in the hope of tracking the movement of the suspected vehicle,โ said Sub-Inspector Sukhwinder Singh, officiating Station House Officer of the Mansa Devi Complex police station.
The post-mortem examination has been deferred as authorities await the arrival of Lt Gen Mannโs son from the United States. The procedure will be conducted once the family completes the necessary formalities.
Lt Gen Mann is survived by his wife and two sonsโone a serving Colonel in the Indian Army and the other an officer with the Canadian Police. He was also the brother of Brigadier (late) Sukhi Mann, a highly respected officer of the Parachute Regiment.
Police have appealed to the public to assist the investigation by sharing any information related to the incident, including eyewitness accounts or dashcam footage, to help identify the offending vehicle and bring the accused to justice.
The incident has sparked concern over road safety and surveillance gaps, particularly in areas frequented by senior citizens, with calls for improved monitoring to prevent similar tragedies.
