The Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Sunday launched Operation Trashi-I after terrorists were cornered in the rugged forested terrain of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to official sources, contact was established in the general area of Son Nar, northeast of Chhatru near Mandral-Singhoora, when terrorists opened fire on security forces during a deliberate search operation. At least three terrorists, suspected to be from the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM), are believed to be trapped in the area.

In a statement, the White Knight Corps said that troops responded with โ€œexceptional professionalism and resolveโ€ while operating in difficult terrain and adverse conditions. Reinforcements have since been inducted to strengthen the cordon, with operations continuing in close coordination with civil administration and other security agencies.

Officials confirmed that the cordon-and-search operation remains underway, with heightened vigilance across the region. The encounter follows intelligence inputs indicating the presence of Pakistani terrorists in dense forest and hilly areas across multiple districts of the Jammu division, including Kathua, Poonch, Rajouri, Kishtwar, Doda, Udhampur, and Reasi.

This is the third terrorist encounter reported in the Jammu region this year. Earlier incidents were recorded in the Kahog and Najote forests of Billawar area in Kathua district on January 7 and January 13.

Security forces have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as operations continue to neutralise the threat and ensure civilian safety.
