Vacancies and Reservations

The UPSC CSE 2026 notification indicates a total of 933 vacancies across various services. This includes positions in the IAS, IPS, IFS, and other central civil services. Reservations are applied as per government norms: 15% for Scheduled Castes (SC), 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (ST), 27% for Other Backward Classes (OBC), and 10% for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Additionally, 33 vacancies are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), ensuring inclusivity in the recruitment process. The exact distribution across services will be finalized based on cadre allocations post-examination.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the UPSC CSE 2026, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Nationality: Candidates must be citizens of India for IAS, IPS, and IFS positions. For other services, citizens of Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibetan refugees (who arrived in India before January 1, 1962) may also apply, subject to specific conditions.
  • Age Limit: Applicants must be between 21 and 32 years old as of August 1, 2026. Age relaxations apply: up to 5 years for SC/ST candidates, 3 years for OBC, and additional relaxations for ex-servicemen, PwBD, and other categories.
  • Educational Qualification: A bachelorโ€™s degree from any recognized university or equivalent is mandatory. Final-year students may apply provisionally, provided they submit proof of qualification before the main examination.
  • Number of Attempts: General category candidates are allowed 6 attempts, OBC candidates 9, and SC/ST candidates unlimited attempts until the age limit is reached. PwBD candidates receive additional relaxations.

Candidates should verify their eligibility thoroughly, as discrepancies may lead to disqualification at any stage.

Application Process

The application for UPSC CSE 2026 is conducted entirely online through the official portals: upsc.gov.in and upsconline.nic.in. The process involves two parts: One-Time Registration (OTR) and the detailed application form.

  1. Registration: New users must complete OTR on upsconline.nic.in, providing basic details and uploading scanned photographs and signatures.
  2. Filling the Form: Select the examination (CSE or IFS), enter personal, educational, and preference details, and upload required documents.
  3. Fee Payment: The application fee is Rs. 100 for general and OBC male candidates. Female candidates, SC/ST, and PwBD applicants are exempt. Payment can be made via net banking, credit/debit cards, or SBI challan.
  4. Submission: Review and submit the form before the deadline of February 24, 2026. Corrections can be made during a specified window post-submission.

Applicants are encouraged to apply early to avoid technical issues and ensure all details are accurate.

Exam Pattern

The UPSC CSE 2026 follows a three-stage selection process:

  • Preliminary Examination: Objective-type, consisting of two papers (General Studies Paper-I and CSAT Paper-II), each of 200 marks. Paper-I covers current events, history, geography, polity, economy, environment, and science. Paper-II tests comprehension, logical reasoning, and basic numeracy. Qualifying in prelims is mandatory to advance; it is screening in nature and does not count toward the final merit.
  • Main Examination: Descriptive-type, comprising nine papers totaling 1750 marks. This includes two qualifying papers (any Indian language and English), four General Studies papers, two optional subject papers, and an essay paper. The mains evaluate in-depth knowledge and analytical skills.
  • Personality Test (Interview): Worth 275 marks, conducted by a board to assess candidatesโ€™ suitability for civil services. The total merit is based on mains (1750) + interview (275) = 2025 marks.

The examination is conducted in offline mode across designated centers in India.

Syllabus Overview

The syllabus for UPSC CSE 2026 remains consistent with previous years, emphasizing a broad understanding of national and international issues.

  • Prelims Syllabus: General Studies includes Indian history, polity, economy, geography, environment, science and technology, and current affairs. CSAT focuses on quantitative aptitude, reasoning, and reading comprehension.
  • Mains Syllabus: General Studies papers cover Indian heritage, governance, social justice, international relations, technology, economic development, biodiversity, security, and disaster management. Optional subjects (chosen from a list of 48) allow specialization, such as history, geography, public administration, or literature.
  • Essay and Language Papers: Essays on contemporary topics; language papers test basic proficiency.

Candidates should refer to the official notification for the detailed syllabus to align their preparation effectively.

Key Changes and Advisories

The 2026 notification introduces no major structural changes but emphasizes digital processes and inclusivity. Candidates are advised to stay updated via the UPSC website, as admit cards for prelims will be released approximately three weeks prior to the exam. Preparation should focus on consistent study, mock tests, and current affairs analysis.

In conclusion, the UPSC CSE 2026 notification marks the commencement of a rigorous yet rewarding journey for civil service aspirants. Eligible candidates are urged to apply promptly and prepare systematically to secure a position in Indiaโ€™s administrative framework. For the official PDF and further details, visit upsc.gov.in.
