In a major counter-intelligence breakthrough, a civilian staffer of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been arrested for allegedly leaking sensitive defence information to Pakistani handlers, exposing a wider espionage network.
Arrest After Months-Long Investigation
The accused, identified as Sumit Kumar (36), a Multi-Tasking Staff member posted at Air Force Station Chabua in Assam, was detained in a joint operation by Rajasthan Intelligence and Air Force Intelligence and brought to Jaipur for interrogation.
The investigation traces back to January 2026, when another suspect from Jaisalmer was arrested, leading authorities to uncover links with Pakistani intelligence operatives.
Sensitive Military Information Leaked
During questioning, officials revealed that the accused had been in contact with Pakistani handlers since 2023 and was allegedly sharing classified information in exchange for money.
The leaked data reportedly included:
- Details of Air Force installations, including Chabua and Nal (Bikaner)
- Locations of fighter aircraft and missile systems
- Sensitive information about IAF personnel and officers
Investigators also found that he helped create social media accounts for handlers using mobile numbers issued in his name.
Case Registered Under Official Secrets Act
A case has been registered under the Official Secrets Act, 1923 and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Larger Espionage Network Suspected
Officials believe the case points to a larger Pakistan-backed espionage network operating across India, with further investigations underway to identify additional operatives and links.
The arrest highlights the continued threat of cyber-enabled espionage and the importance of robust counter-intelligence mechanisms to safeguard national security.
