The Indian Navy has unveiled TRIDENT-SAMUDRA, an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) powered ocean surveillance system, aimed at significantly improving maritime domain awareness and security across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The system was showcased during the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
Developed in collaboration with technology partners including Blurgs Innovations, TRIDENT-SAMUDRA is designed as a next-generation intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platform capable of identifying, tracking and analysing maritime activities in real time.
AI-Driven Maritime Surveillance
The system uses advanced AI algorithms and machine learning models to process large volumes of data collected from satellites, sensors, underwater arrays and surveillance platforms. By analysing these data streams, TRIDENT-SAMUDRA can detect suspicious maritime behaviour and flag anomalies that may indicate potential threats.
This capability enables the Navy and Coast Guard to monitor commercial shipping traffic, fishing activities and possible adversarial movements, ensuring a comprehensive operational picture of the maritime environment.
Enhanced Situational Awareness and Faster Response
TRIDENT-SAMUDRA improves situational awareness by integrating information from multiple sources into a unified surveillance network. Automation significantly reduces the need for manual monitoring of coastal and maritime areas, allowing faster threat detection and quicker decision-making for commanders.
The system’s edge computing capabilities ensure low-latency data processing even in complex operational environments, giving naval forces a critical time advantage during emerging security situations.
Focus on Underwater Security
One of the key objectives of TRIDENT-SAMUDRA is strengthening underwater surveillance, particularly in sensitive regions such as the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The system is designed to track unusual underwater activities, including possible submarine movements, helping counter growing undersea threats.
Integration with Naval Platforms
TRIDENT-SAMUDRA has been developed as an indigenous solution under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and is designed to integrate seamlessly with frontline naval platforms and command networks. It can be embedded into modern warships, including platforms such as INS Surat, providing AI-assisted real-time operational support.
The system is also expected to work alongside the Navy’s broader digital ecosystem, including the Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) and satellite-based communication networks.
Strengthening India’s Maritime Security
With India’s 7,500-km coastline and vast Exclusive Economic Zone, advanced surveillance systems are critical for monitoring maritime traffic, protecting sea lanes and countering emerging threats such as unmanned underwater vehicles or hostile intrusions.
The introduction of TRIDENT-SAMUDRA marks a major step in the Indian Navy’s transition toward AI-enabled, network-centric maritime operations, strengthening India’s strategic capabilities in an increasingly competitive Indo-Pacific security environment.
