Lance Havildar Arun Kumar Named Overall Best Student as Indian Army Mortar Course Concludes at Infantry School, Mhow

Meanwhile, Corporal Zuhain Ahmed Mohamed of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) was awarded the title of Best Foreign Student for his impressive performance during the course.

The Indian Army’s specialised Mortar Course for Junior Leaders concluded successfully at the Infantry School, Mhow, on March 10, 2026. The course, designed to enhance the technical proficiency and battlefield effectiveness of junior leaders, brought together soldiers from the Indian Army as well as friendly foreign nations for intensive training in mortar operations and fire support.

The closing ceremony marked the culmination of weeks of rigorous training focused on improving accuracy, coordination, and tactical employment of mortar systems on the battlefield. Participants underwent comprehensive instruction covering mortar deployment, fire control procedures, target acquisition, and coordination with infantry units to ensure effective indirect fire support during operations.

During the ceremony, the participants were encouraged to utilise the knowledge and practical skills gained during the course to enhance battlefield effectiveness and precision in fire support. Senior instructors emphasised the critical role mortars play in modern combat operations, particularly in providing responsive and accurate indirect fire to support infantry manoeuvres.

The course also reflected the Indian Army’s commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with friendly foreign countries. Along with Indian Army personnel, seven soldiers from Tanzania, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and the Maldives participated in the training programme, highlighting the growing military-to-military cooperation and professional exchange between India and partner nations.

At the conclusion of the course, outstanding performers were recognised for their excellence. Lance Havildar Arun Kumar was adjudged the Overall Best Student, demonstrating exceptional proficiency in both theoretical and practical aspects of mortar operations. Meanwhile, Corporal Zuhain Ahmed Mohamed of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) was awarded the title of Best Foreign Student for his impressive performance during the course.
