President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious “President of India’s Police Colour” to the Sikkim Police at a ceremonial event held in Gangtok on Wednesday.
Congratulating the officers and personnel associated with the Sikkim Police, the President praised the force for its dedicated service in maintaining peace, security, and justice in the state since its establishment in 1897.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu said India’s policing system still carries remnants of a colonial mindset where the police were primarily used to control citizens rather than serve them. She stressed the need to completely shed this colonial outlook to empower citizens and strengthen the vision of a developed India under “Viksit Bharat.”
The President underlined that transparency, accountability, and citizen-friendly policing are essential for building public trust. She emphasised that ordinary citizens should be able to register grievances without fear and called for greater sensitivity towards women, children, and vulnerable sections of society.

President Murmu stated that the police must evolve into partners and guides for citizens rather than merely functioning as law enforcement authorities. She said such an approach would strengthen trust between the police and the public while enhancing respect for the rule of law.
Highlighting the broader role of policing, she noted that the objective of the police system should extend beyond apprehending criminals to building a secure, socially conscious, and harmonious society.
The President also appreciated the professional conduct and people-friendly approach of the Sikkim Police, noting that the force has earned the affection and respect of the people of Sikkim through its dedicated service and commitment towards maintaining peace and harmony in the state.
