Major Anshul Baltoo of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry and 32 Assam Rifles has been awarded the prestigious Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, for displaying conspicuous bravery, exceptional leadership and unwavering devotion to duty during a counter-insurgency operation in Assam.
The award was conferred by President Droupadi Murmu during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

On 29 April 2025, acting on precise intelligence inputs regarding the presence of armed militants, Major Baltoo led a high-risk cordon, combing and search operation in the challenging terrain of Dima Hasao district in Assam. During the early stages of the mission, his team came under intense and sustained fire from heavily armed militants who subsequently attempted to escape into dense jungle terrain.
Despite difficult weather, rugged terrain and the constant threat posed by hostile militants, Major Baltoo displayed exceptional determination and tactical acumen. Refusing to allow the militants to regroup or escape, he maintained relentless pressure on the fleeing insurgents and conducted a systematic day-long search operation, keeping his troops focused, motivated and mission-ready under extremely demanding conditions.
During the operation, Major Baltoo encountered an armed militant attempting to retrieve a weapon and reposition for an attack. Faced with imminent danger, he demonstrated extraordinary courage and presence of mind. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he engaged the militant in a close-quarter encounter and successfully neutralised him, eliminating a direct threat to his troops.
The operation concluded with a major success for the security forces. Three armed militants were neutralised, and a substantial cache of weapons and war-like stores was recovered, including three AK-47 rifles, two 9mm pistols and other military equipment. The successful mission dealt a significant blow to the militant network operating in the area.
Throughout the operation, Major Baltoo’s calm leadership, battlefield composure and fearless conduct inspired his men and ensured mission success in highly challenging circumstances. His actions reflected the highest standards of military professionalism and operational excellence.
A native of Ghunsa village in Jubbal tehsil of Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, Major Baltoo’s achievement has brought pride to his home state and the nation.
For his conspicuous gallantry, outstanding leadership and steadfast commitment to duty in the face of grave danger, Major Anshul Baltoo has been awarded the Shaurya Chakra, honouring a remarkable act of courage and selfless service to the nation.
