In a swift and professional operation, the Indian Navy’s frontline Talwar-class stealth frigate INS Trikand successfully thwarted a piracy attempt on the merchant vessel MV Golden Arsenal in the Gulf of Aden on the night of July 1, 2026. The incident underscores the Indian Navy’s continued vigilance and rapid response capabilities in protecting vital sea lanes and ensuring the safety of international shipping in the Indian Ocean Region.
According to government sources, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines-flagged bulk carrier MV Golden Arsenal, which was carrying critical cargo destined for India, came under threat when suspected pirates attempted to board the vessel. The multinational crew, including one Indian national, immediately took refuge in the ship’s citadel—a reinforced safe room designed for such contingencies—and transmitted a distress signal through established emergency communication channels.
Responding promptly to the distress call, INS Trikand, deployed on anti-piracy patrols in the Western Indian Ocean, altered course and proceeded at high speed toward the affected vessel. As the Indian Navy warship closed in, the suspected pirates abandoned their boarding attempt and fled the area without gaining control of the ship or causing harm to the crew.
Following the pirates’ withdrawal, Indian Navy Marine Commandos (MARCOS) boarded MV Golden Arsenal to conduct a comprehensive sanitisation operation. The elite special forces personnel thoroughly searched the vessel to confirm the absence of any hostile elements, verified the safety and well-being of all crew members, and ensured the ship was secure. The crew underwent necessary medical checks, and no injuries were reported. Once the all-clear was given, the vessel was authorised to resume its voyage.

INS Trikand, a modern stealth frigate equipped with advanced sensors, weapons systems, and the capability to embark helicopters, forms part of the Indian Navy’s sustained deployment for maritime security operations. This successful intervention follows an earlier response by the same warship in mid-June 2026, when it deterred a suspected piracy attempt on another merchant vessel, MV Fareeda 5, in the Western Indian Ocean. The Indian Navy has maintained a dedicated anti-piracy presence in the region for years, acting as a reliable first responder and security partner committed to safeguarding merchant shipping and upholding freedom of navigation.
The Gulf of Aden remains a strategically vital chokepoint for global maritime trade, including energy supplies and essential commodities critical to India’s economic interests. The safe resolution of this incident without escalation highlights the effectiveness of the Indian Navy’s proactive posture, precise coordination between surface assets and special forces, and its commitment to protecting Indian nationals and national interests at sea.
Indian Navy sources emphasised that timely intervention ensured the safety of the vessel and its crew. The service continues to monitor the maritime domain closely and stands ready to respond to any threats to shipping in the Indian Ocean Region.
This operation once again demonstrates the professionalism, readiness, and operational reach of the Indian Navy in securing the seas for peaceful commerce.
