In a heartwarming tribute to a soldier’s enduring legacy, Prateek, the son of late Naik Pramod Kumar Singh of the Indian Army, has secured admission to the prestigious Rashtriya Military School (RMS), Bengaluru. The achievement marks a significant milestone for the young boy and his mother, Nirma Kumari, who has raised her children with remarkable courage after losing her husband in the line of duty in 2022.
The news has been widely celebrated as a testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering spirit of military families. It also serves as a reminder that while soldiers may make the supreme sacrifice, their values and dreams continue to inspire future generations.
Naik Pramod Kumar Singh served with distinction in the 221 Field Regiment of the Regiment of Artillery, one of the Indian Army’s premier combat support arms. Hailing from Bampali village in Bhojpur district, Bihar, he fulfilled his childhood dream of serving the nation when he joined the Indian Army in 2011. Over more than a decade of dedicated service, he earned the rank of Naik through his commitment and professionalism.
In December 2022, his unit was deployed in the challenging high-altitude terrain of North Sikkim near the Indo-China border. The region is known for its harsh winters, heavy snowfall, steep mountain roads and difficult operational conditions, making troop movement both essential and hazardous.
On 23 December 2022, Naik Pramod Kumar Singh was part of a three-vehicle military convoy moving from Chatten to Thangu for an operational task. The convoy included personnel from several Indian Army units, including 221 Field Regiment, 285 Medium Regiment, 26 Mechanised Infantry, 25 Grenadiers, 8 Rajputana Rifles, 113 Engineer Regiment and 1871 Field Regiment.
While negotiating a sharp bend near Zema in North Sikkim, one of the vehicles carrying 20 soldiers skidded off the narrow mountain road and plunged into a deep gorge. The devastating accident left all occupants critically injured. Despite immediate rescue efforts and evacuation to a military hospital, 16 brave soldiers, including Naik Pramod Kumar Singh, succumbed to their injuries.
His martyrdom was mourned across the nation, and he left behind his parents, wife Nirma Kumari, a son and a daughter. His sacrifice became a symbol of the countless hardships and risks faced daily by Indian soldiers serving in some of the world’s most demanding operational environments.
Nearly four years later, his family’s journey has reached an inspiring milestone. Prateek’s admission to Rashtriya Military School Bengaluru, one of India’s most prestigious military residential schools, reflects not only his own hard work but also the determination of his mother, who has steadfastly supported her children despite immense personal loss.
Rashtriya Military Schools have a distinguished history of preparing young students for leadership, discipline and service to the nation. Many alumni have gone on to join the National Defence Academy, the Indian Armed Forces and other prestigious institutions. Securing admission is considered a notable achievement due to the competitive selection process.
The success of Prateek carries special significance because it represents the continuation of a soldier’s legacy. His father’s life was dedicated to serving the nation, and his son’s entry into a premier military institution keeps alive the ideals of patriotism, discipline and selfless service that Naik Pramod Kumar Singh embodied.
The story has drawn heartfelt congratulations from people across the country, with many describing it as a reminder that the sacrifices of India’s brave soldiers extend far beyond the battlefield. It also highlights the resilience of military families, who continue to rebuild their lives while honouring the memory of their loved ones.
As Prateek begins a new chapter at Rashtriya Military School Bengaluru, he carries with him not only the aspirations of his family but also the proud legacy of a father who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation. His achievement stands as an inspiring example that courage, perseverance and determination can transform grief into hope and pave the way for a brighter future.
