Rear Admiral Vishal Bishnoi Assumes Command of the Eastern Fleet

Rear Admiral Vishal Bishnoi Assumes Command of the Eastern Fleet

Rear Admiral Vishal Bishnoi officially assumed command of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet from Rear Admiral Alok Ananda, YSM, during a ceremonial parade held on 24 July 2026. The change of command marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Eastern Fleet, the Indian Navy’s premier force on the eastern seaboard, entrusted with safeguarding India’s maritime interests in the Bay of Bengal and the wider Indo-Pacific region.

Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1994, Rear Admiral Bishnoi is an alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, and the College of Air Warfare, Secunderabad. His distinguished academic and professional training has prepared him for a wide range of operational and strategic responsibilities throughout his naval career.

A specialist Fighter Pilot, Rear Admiral Bishnoi has accumulated extensive operational experience across aviation, fleet operations and command appointments. Over the years, he has held several key afloat and shore-based positions, contributing significantly to the operational readiness and combat capability of the Indian Navy.

Among his notable appointments, Rear Admiral Bishnoi has commanded the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, one of the Indian Navy’s most formidable maritime assets. He has also commanded the frontline stealth frigate INS Trikand and the amphibious warfare ship INS Gharial, demonstrating his versatility in leading diverse classes of warships across varied operational environments.

His aviation leadership includes commanding INS Dega, the Naval Air Station at Visakhapatnam, and the elite fighter squadron INAS 300, known as the “White Tigers.” These appointments underscore his deep expertise in naval aviation and his contribution to strengthening the Indian Navy’s maritime air power.

As the new Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, Rear Admiral Bishnoi will lead a powerful formation comprising frontline destroyers, frigates, corvettes, submarines and support vessels. The Eastern Fleet plays a pivotal role in ensuring maritime security, maintaining operational readiness, conducting joint exercises with friendly foreign navies and supporting India’s strategic interests across the Indo-Pacific.

The ceremonial transfer of command also marked the successful tenure of Rear Admiral Alok Ananda, YSM, under whose leadership the Eastern Fleet continued to enhance its operational capabilities and participate in numerous national and international deployments and exercises.

With decades of operational experience and a distinguished record of command, Rear Admiral Vishal Bishnoi assumes leadership of the Eastern Fleet at a time when the Indian Navy continues to expand its role as a key maritime force in the Indo-Pacific. His appointment reinforces the Navy’s commitment to maintaining a combat-ready, technologically advanced and mission-focused fleet capable of addressing evolving maritime security challenges.
