A major counter-terrorism operation is underway in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district after two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists were spotted in an orchard, prompting a swift response from security forces.
The operation was launched after surveillance footage captured the presence of the two terrorists, identified as Latif and Zakir, in the orchard area. Acting on the intelligence, a joint team comprising the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) established a tight cordon around the area.
Security forces have sealed all possible escape routes while conducting systematic search operations across seven villages in the vicinity. By the latest reports, four villages had been thoroughly searched as the operation continued.
According to officials, the terrorists opened fire on the security forces after being cornered, leading to an exchange of fire. The operation remains in progress as forces continue efforts to neutralise the militants.
Both terrorists are reported to be residents of Kulgam district, with Zakir believed to have joined Lashkar-e-Taiba in 2024 and Latif in 2025.
Officials noted that Shopian remains a strategically significant area due to its dense orchards and forest cover, which have historically been exploited by terrorists as transit routes between South Kashmir, Central Kashmir and the Pir Panjal region. Security agencies said sustained operations against local terrorist operatives remain crucial to dismantling militant support networks and preventing further recruitment in the Valley.
