India successfully test-fired the Agni-4 medium-range ballistic missile on 6 August 2026 from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha, marking another significant milestone in the country’s strategic missile programme and reinforcing its credible deterrence capability.
The launch was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), the organisation responsible for the operational management of India’s strategic missile assets. According to the Ministry of Defence, the test successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile system, with every mission objective being achieved as planned.
The Ministry stated that the successful launch demonstrated the operational readiness of the Agni-4 missile as well as the reliability and effectiveness of its onboard systems. The trial reaffirmed the robustness of the missile’s design and its ability to perform as intended under operational conditions.
Agni-4 is an indigenously developed medium-range ballistic missile and forms a key component of India’s strategic deterrence architecture. Developed under the country’s indigenous missile development programme, the missile is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear payloads, providing the Armed Forces with a reliable strategic strike capability.
The missile’s successful test further strengthens India’s long-term commitment to maintaining a credible minimum deterrence through a modern, dependable and technologically advanced missile force. The Agni series of ballistic missiles continues to serve as a critical pillar of India’s strategic defence posture.
The launch also highlights the sustained progress of India’s indigenous defence research and missile development efforts, reflecting the country’s growing technological self-reliance in strategic weapons systems.
Officials confirmed that the trial met all planned objectives, with the missile successfully completing its designated flight profile while validating its guidance, navigation, control and overall system performance.
The successful Agni-4 test underscores the readiness of India’s strategic missile forces and reinforces the nation’s capability to safeguard its security interests through a robust and credible strategic deterrent.
