INS Mangrol, the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi, was delivered to the Indian Navy on August 21, 2026, marking another milestone in India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme.
The vessel has more than 80 per cent indigenous content and has been designed to undertake a range of missions in coastal waters. Its primary roles include underwater surveillance, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and mine warfare.
Mangrol is equipped with advanced torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets, supported by modern radar and sonar systems. These capabilities enable the vessel to detect and respond to underwater threats while enhancing the Navy’s ability to maintain situational awareness in the littoral environment.

The vessel is propelled by waterjets, providing it with the manoeuvrability required for operations in shallow and coastal waters. Its specialised design and equipment make it a valuable platform for tackling emerging underwater security challenges.
Mangrol derives its name from the coastal town and minor port of Mangrol in Junagadh district of Gujarat, which is known for its maritime and marine fishing activities.
The vessel also carries forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Mangrol, an Indian Naval Minesweeper that remained in service until 2004. The continuation of the name reflects the Indian Navy’s tradition of preserving the legacy of distinguished warships.

The delivery of Mangrol further strengthens the Indian Navy’s fleet of specialised platforms for coastal security and underwater warfare. Its induction will enhance capabilities for anti-submarine operations, surveillance and mine warfare in strategically important littoral waters.
The vessel’s high level of indigenous content also highlights the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence manufacturing and shipbuilding ecosystem.
The delivery represents another significant step in the Indian Navy’s indigenous shipbuilding journey and reinforces the Government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. It demonstrates the increasing ability of Indian shipyards and defence industries to develop and deliver specialised naval platforms to meet the operational requirements of the armed forces.
