Pakistan has authorised the deployment of three companies of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi for a period of six months to undertake “sensitive security duties”, according to an order issued by the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control.
The order, dated August 21, 2026, was issued under Article 245 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which allows the armed forces to assist civil authorities in maintaining security. The deployment followed a request from the Punjab government’s Home Department and took effect immediately.
According to the notification, the troops will assist the Rawalpindi district administration in dealing with any “undesirable situation” and responding to unforeseen circumstances during the six-month deployment period.
The authorities, however, have not publicly specified the particular threat, incident or security challenge that prompted the request for additional military deployment. The exact duties to be performed by the three Army companies have also not been disclosed.
Reports in Pakistani media indicate that the troops will support the civil administration in maintaining security and responding to sensitive security requirements in the strategically important city.
The deployment assumes particular significance because Rawalpindi is home to the General Headquarters of the Pakistan Army and serves as one of the country’s most important military and administrative centres.
The decision to deploy additional troops in the city therefore comes amid heightened security concerns, although there has been no official indication that the move is linked to any specific incident.
The order was circulated among senior federal and Punjab government officials as well as military authorities, formally placing the Army in a supporting role alongside the Rawalpindi district administration.
The deployment highlights the continuing role of Pakistan’s armed forces in assisting civil authorities during periods of heightened security requirements, while the nature of the security assessment behind the latest move remains undisclosed.
