Mumbai: Indian Navy sailor Purnamal Mehra, 30, is suspected by police of killing his wife and two young children before dying by suicide at their official residential quarters in Navy Nagar, Cuffe Parade, south Mumbai. Investigators say he formatted mobile phones, cleaned the house, cleared the garbage bin, and took steps to seal the premises in an apparent attempt to erase evidence and delay discovery.

The bodies were discovered on the evening of 15 August 2026 after Mehra’s family in Rajasthan raised an alarm. On the night of 14 August, around 11 pm, Mehra sent a WhatsApp message to his father Shambhulal (or to family members) saying, in essence, “Come and take our bodies” (reported variations include “Come and take our dead bodies”). When the message was seen the next morning and repeated calls went unanswered, the family contacted the Navy control room. Naval personnel and Cuffe Parade police reached the locked quarters, forced entry, and found Mehra dead (hanging, according to multiple accounts) in the living room or an adjacent room. The bodies of his wife Oma (also reported as Uma), about 28, their three-year-old son, and their two-month-old infant were found on a bed in another room.

Police noted a clear difference in the condition of the bodies: those of the wife and children showed more advanced decomposition, leading investigators to conclude that they had died at least 24 hours earlier than Mehra. An Accidental Death Report was initially registered. Final post-mortem, viscera, and forensic reports are awaited before a formal FIR is expected to be filed against the deceased sailor.

Police Findings on Evidence and Sequence

Senior officers and sources from Cuffe Parade police station have stated that Mehra cleaned the house, washed areas, and emptied the garbage bin after the alleged killings. He formatted both his own and his wife’s mobile phones, erasing call records, chats, and other data. The devices have been sent for cyber forensic analysis in an effort to recover any residual information that could clarify the timeline or motive. He is also reported to have placed clothing material to cover gaps between the door and door frame, and in some accounts used a bed to barricade the room where he died.

Preliminary suspicions regarding the causes of death include poisoning of the wife and older child (foam noted around mouths in some early observations; food and water samples from the house sent for testing) and possible smothering or strangulation of the infant with a pillow. No obvious poisonous substance was immediately recovered at the scene. Mehra’s death has been linked to hanging/asphyxia in preliminary accounts. Exact causes and the precise sequence remain subject to laboratory confirmation.

Background and Possible Contributing Factors

Mehra, originally from Kakrana village in Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan, joined the Indian Navy in 2015. He married Oma (from Sikar district, Rajasthan) around December 2020. The couple had two children. Neighbours and family accounts described limited social interaction; Mehra was often silent and kept to himself. Relatives reportedly did not visit after the birth of the second child, and relations between the two families were strained.

Police and family statements indicate Mehra had been suffering from depression for several months to about a year and was under medical treatment, including at the Navy’s INHS Asvini hospital. He had taken parental leave in June but had not returned to regular duty. After the birth of the second child he is said to have sought an office-based posting due to childcare difficulties without family support nearby; the request was not granted and he continued ship-related duties, according to some reports. Monetary and property disputes with siblings had led to estrangement. Marital discord and frequent quarrels were also mentioned in early inquiries.

A particularly concerning detail emerged from investigators: about a week before the deaths, the wife had called her father expressing fear that her husband, who spoke of death, might harm her and the children. The father travelled to Mumbai and attempted to take them away, but Mehra argued and refused to allow them to leave.

Investigation Status and Official Response

Cuffe Parade police have recorded statements from multiple people, including neighbours and family. Cyber experts are working on the formatted phones. Food items, medicines found in the house, viscera samples, and other forensic material have been sent for analysis (including to the Kalina forensic laboratory). The Indian Navy described the incident as “unfortunate,” confirmed the discovery of the sailor, his wife and two children dead at the Navy Nagar residence on 15 August 2026, and stated that it is extending all possible assistance to the police investigation.

Bodies were taken to JJ Hospital, where they were declared brought dead. Last rites were later performed in Rajasthan, with reports of a guard of honour for the sailor.

The case remains under active investigation. Police continue to await conclusive forensic and post-mortem findings to establish the exact causes of death, the full sequence of events, and any additional motives. No suicide note was recovered. The tragedy has drawn attention to mental health support within the armed forces and the challenges faced by service personnel balancing operational duties with young families.

(Details compiled from official police statements reported by multiple outlets including The Times of India, The Indian Express, Hindustan Times, and others as of 20–21 August 2026. Names and minor particulars show slight variations across reports; core police findings on the cleaning of the house, formatting of phones, differential decomposition, the WhatsApp message, depression treatment, and the alleged sequence are consistent.)
