Lt Colonel Neeraj Chopra Wins Silver at Commonwealth Games 2026

Glasgow, July 31, 2026: Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Neeraj Chopra of the Indian Territorial Army delivered a composed season-best performance to claim the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw final at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The Olympic and World champion threw 85.83 metres at Scotstoun Stadium under challenging headwind conditions, finishing behind Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage while helping India secure its first-ever double podium in the event.

Yash Vir Singh, making his Commonwealth Games debut, produced a dramatic personal best of 85.41 metres on his final attempt to take bronze. The result marked a landmark evening for Indian athletics, with three Indians qualifying for the final and two standing on the podium.

Final Results

  1. Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage (Sri Lanka) – 89.75m (Gold)
  2. Neeraj Chopra (India) – 85.83m (Silver, season best)
  3. Yash Vir Singh (India) – 85.41m (Bronze, personal best)
  4. Anderson Peters (Grenada) – 83.88m
  5. Douw Smit (South Africa) – 82.88m
  6. Keshorn Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago) – 82.55m
  7. Rohit Yadav (India) – 81.56m
  8. Ben East (England) – 81.12m
  9. Arshad Nadeem (Pakistan) – 77.41m

Pathirage’s gold-winning throw came in the second round and remained his only valid effort of the night. The 23-year-old’s performance delivered Sri Lanka’s first athletics gold at the Commonwealth Games since 2006 and its first-ever gold in track and field at the Games.

Chopra’s Throw Series and Conditions

Strong headwinds made long throws difficult throughout the evening. Chopra’s series was measured and efficient:

  • Round 1: 80.97m
  • Round 2: 85.83m (season best)
  • Round 3: 81.29m
  • Round 4: 80.73m
  • Round 5: Foul
  • Round 6: Foul

The 85.83m effort, produced early in the competition, proved decisive for silver. It improved on his previous season best of 85.69m recorded at the Doha Diamond League. After securing a place in the top eight, Chopra’s later attempts reflected an effort to chase greater distance against the wind, resulting in two fouls.

In qualification the previous day, Chopra had managed 79.61m (fifth place) in difficult conditions and did not take his third attempt once qualification was assured. Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh also advanced, giving India three finalists for the first time in the event’s history at the Commonwealth Games.

Nadeem’s Shock Exit and the Changing of the Guard

One of the biggest surprises of the night was the early elimination of Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, the defending Commonwealth Games champion and Paris 2024 Olympic gold medallist. Nadeem’s best mark of 77.41m left him ninth, and he failed to advance beyond the first three rounds. The result underscored how the traditional Chopra-Nadeem rivalry was disrupted on this occasion by Pathirage’s exceptional form and the testing conditions.

Army Officer and National Icon

Neeraj Chopra, now 28, holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. He enlisted in the Indian Army in 2016 as a Junior Commissioned Officer (Naib Subedar) and rose through the ranks of Subedar and Subedar Major before being conferred the honorary Lieutenant Colonel rank in 2025 by the President of India. The formal pipping ceremony was held in New Delhi in October 2025, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presenting the insignia. He has also been decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal.

His competitive record remains one of the most consistent in modern javelin history. The Khel Ratna and Padma Shri awardee owns the Indian national record of 90.23m (set in 2025). His major titles include Olympic gold (Tokyo 2020), Olympic silver (Paris 2024), World Championship gold (Budapest 2023), Asian Games golds (2018 and 2022), and Commonwealth Games gold (Gold Coast 2018). He had missed the Birmingham 2022 Games due to injury.

Speaking after the final, Chopra expressed satisfaction with the result and his progress: he highlighted the season-best throw and noted that his comeback was progressing well, with more competitions ahead. The silver marked his second Commonwealth Games medal.

Historic Double Podium and Broader Significance

Yash Vir Singh’s bronze on debut, achieved with a final-round personal best that improved on his previous mark of 83.72m, completed a night of depth rarely seen in Indian javelin. The double podium is the first of its kind for India in the men’s javelin at the Commonwealth Games and reflects sustained investment in the event following Chopra’s breakthrough years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur were among those who publicly congratulated the pair, praising Chopra’s consistency and the emergence of a new generation of throwers. The result added to India’s strong showing in athletics and other disciplines at Glasgow 2026.

For defence aspirants and the wider sporting community, Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra continues to embody the dual commitment of excellence in sport and service to the nation. His ability to deliver a season-best under pressure, while sharing the podium with a rising teammate, reinforces his status as both a standard-bearer for Indian athletics and an officer of the Indian Army.
