In a tribute to the courage and supreme sacrifice of Major Dhan Singh Thapa, PVC, the Surya Sports Complex in Lucknow has been dedicated in his honour and renamed the Dhan Singh Thapa Sports Complex.
The dedication ceremony was led by Major Dhan Singh Thapa’s daughters, Smt Pomela Chauhan and Ms Poornima Thapa. The event was attended by Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command, Mrs Ruchira Sengupta, Regional President of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), along with senior Army officers and personnel of Surya Command.
Major Dhan Singh Thapa was a legendary soldier of 1/8 Gorkha Rifles who displayed exceptional courage and leadership during the 1962 Battle of Ladakh. His actions during the conflict earned him the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award.
The dedication of the sports complex seeks to preserve the legacy of Major Thapa and ensure that his story of courage, leadership and devotion to duty continues to inspire generations of young people.
The renamed complex will serve not only as a sporting facility but also as a lasting reminder of the values represented by the decorated soldier. Through the honour, the Army seeks to connect the spirit of sporting excellence with the ideals of discipline, determination, courage and service.
The presence of Major Thapa’s daughters at the ceremony added a personal dimension to the tribute, marking the continuation of his legacy through his family and the wider military community.
The Dhan Singh Thapa Sports Complex is expected to stand as a permanent symbol of the indomitable spirit of one of India’s most celebrated soldiers and inspire young generations to uphold the highest ideals of courage, duty and service to the nation.
