New Delhi: A Delhi Police constable deployed as a rooftop sniper during the recently concluded 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi has been suspended after videos allegedly recorded from his sensitive security post appeared on Instagram.
The constable, identified as Deepak Bangar, was posted with the Foreigners Cell of Delhi Police’s Northwest district. He had been temporarily deployed for BRICS security at a five-star hotel in Central Delhi where foreign delegates were staying. As part of the security arrangements, Bangar was assigned sniper duty on the hotel’s terrace.
The matter came to light after videos posted from his Instagram account began circulating online.
Videos Showed Pistol and Sniper Rifle
In one of the videos, Bangar can reportedly be seen in civilian clothes wearing a BRICS Summit 2026 identity card while handling a service pistol. The hotel premises and parts of the surrounding area were also visible in the footage.
Another video showed him looking through the scope of a sniper rifle while positioned on the terrace. Buildings and structures surrounding the security post could be seen in the background.
The videos were reportedly uploaded from the Instagram account @jaat.bangar.0143, which has since been blocked. The footage attracted attention online because it appeared to have been recorded during a highly sensitive security deployment involving foreign dignitaries.
Constable Removed From BRICS Duty
After the videos came to the notice of senior officials, Delhi Police removed Bangar from BRICS security duty and sent him back to his parent district. He was subsequently suspended with immediate effect.
A departmental inquiry has also been ordered to determine the circumstances in which the videos were recorded and uploaded.
According to a senior police officer quoted in media reports, the department has taken serious note of the disciplinary lapse and further proceedings will be initiated in accordance with rules after the inquiry.
The inquiry is expected to examine when the footage was recorded, whether Bangar was actively on duty at the time and whether sensitive aspects of the security deployment were exposed through the social media posts.
Sensitive Security Deployment
The incident occurred during extensive security arrangements for the 18th BRICS Summit, hosted by India at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, 2026. The summit brought together leaders and representatives of BRICS member and partner countries.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and several other international leaders participated in the summit. Security had been tightened around Bharat Mandapam, hotels accommodating foreign delegations and designated travel routes.
The concern surrounding the videos is not merely the display of firearms. Images or videos recorded from sensitive security positions can potentially reveal the location of personnel, observation points, sightlines and other aspects of a security deployment.
There has been no reported security incident or attack linked to the videos.
Delhi Police will decide whether additional disciplinary action should be taken against the constable after completion of the departmental inquiry.
