Arunachal Pradesh, November 2, 2026: Brigadier Rupam Chatterjee assumed command of Project Vartak of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on November 2, 2026, succeeding Brigadier Sanjeet Singh, who completed his tenure of dedicated service.
The leadership transition marks an important development for Project Vartak, which plays a crucial role in developing and maintaining strategically significant road infrastructure across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, particularly in remote and challenging border regions.
Project Vartak is among the important infrastructure projects of the Border Roads Organisation, tasked with ensuring reliable road connectivity in the northeastern region of India. Its responsibilities include sustaining vital lines of communication that support military mobility, logistical operations and civilian connectivity in strategically sensitive areas.
The project operates in challenging geographical conditions characterised by mountainous terrain, heavy rainfall, landslides and difficult weather conditions. Maintaining roads in these areas requires continuous engineering efforts, effective planning and timely infrastructure development.
During his tenure, Brigadier Sanjeet Singh contributed to the project’s mission of strengthening strategic connectivity and maintaining essential road networks. His leadership reflected the BRO’s continued commitment to developing infrastructure in remote border areas while addressing complex engineering and logistical challenges.
On assuming command, Brigadier Rupam Chatterjee reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the Border Roads Organisation’s motto, “Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam,” which translates to “Everything is achievable through hard work.”
He emphasised dedication, engineering excellence and timely execution as important priorities for further strengthening road infrastructure and connectivity across the region.
Project Vartak holds considerable strategic importance because Arunachal Pradesh shares a sensitive international border with China. Reliable road infrastructure is essential for the rapid movement of troops, military equipment and logistical supplies, thereby contributing to the operational preparedness of the Indian Armed Forces.
Beyond its strategic role, the project also contributes significantly to regional development by improving connectivity for communities living in remote and difficult-to-access areas. Better roads facilitate access to healthcare, education, markets and other essential services while supporting economic activities and improving the quality of life of local residents.
The Border Roads Organisation has remained at the forefront of infrastructure development in India’s border regions, undertaking complex road construction and maintenance projects under demanding environmental and geographical conditions.
Under Brigadier Rupam Chatterjee’s leadership, Project Vartak will continue its mission of developing and sustaining essential infrastructure, ensuring that strategically important routes remain operational and accessible.
The assumption of command reinforces the BRO’s enduring commitment to nation-building, engineering excellence and the development of robust border infrastructure, strengthening both national security and regional connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
