The iconic 18 Squadron ‘Flying Bullets’ of the Indian Air Force marked its Diamond Jubilee, celebrating 60 years of valour, precision and operational excellence at Air Force Station Naliya.

Raised on 15 April 1965 at Ambala, the celebrated squadron has flown some of the IAF’s most distinguished fighters — the Gnat, Ajeet, and MiG-27 ML. Today, it proudly operates the indigenous LCA Tejas Mk-1 (FOC), embodying the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in frontline air defence.

The squadron earned its immortal title, ‘Defenders of the Valley’, for its heroic role in safeguarding Srinagar during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. It also holds the unique distinction of being the only IAF unit with a Param Vir Chakra awardee — Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, PVC (Posthumous), whose unmatched courage continues to inspire future generations of air warriors.

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations honoured the rich legacy, sacrifices and unyielding spirit of the Flying Bullets, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to the defence of the nation.
