President Droupadi Murmu, in her capacity as the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, undertook a historic sortie as co-pilot in the indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) ‘Prachand’ at the Jaisalmer Air Force Station. This event occurred ahead of the Indian Air Force’s Exercise Vayu Shakti, highlighting India’s advancements in domestic defence manufacturing.
The sortie, conducted near the India-Pakistan border, allowed the President to perform an aerial survey of the firing range, demonstrating the operational capabilities of the helicopter in challenging terrains. Designed for high-altitude and extreme conditions, the LCH Prachand is manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and represents a milestone in India’s self-reliance in military technology.
This marks the third occasion on which President Murmu has engaged with frontline military aircraft. Previously, she completed a sortie in a Sukhoi-30 MKI at Tezpur Air Force Station in Assam in April 2023 and in a Rafale fighter jet at Ambala in October of the same year. These experiences underscore her commitment to understanding the operational readiness of the armed forces.
The President’s visit to Rajasthan, which commenced the previous evening, includes witnessing the Vayu Shakti exercise, a demonstration of the Indian Air Force’s firepower and precision. Defence officials noted that the sortie showcased the helicopter’s advanced features, including its suitability for combat operations in diverse environments.
The LCH Prachand, inducted into service in recent years, is equipped for anti-infantry and anti-armour missions, further strengthening India’s defence posture. This event not only boosts morale among the armed forces but also emphasizes the importance of indigenous innovation in national security.
