The contract, signed with JCB India Ltd, is for the supply of 93 telescopic handlers under the Buy (Indian) category at a total cost of ₹25.90 crore.

This pioneering move marks the Army’s adoption of a transparent, efficient, and technology-driven platform for capital procurement—traditionally a more complex and time-consuming process. By leveraging GeM, the Army aims to significantly reduce procurement timelines while maintaining strict adherence to established procedures and ensuring institutional integrity.

Officials noted that the initiative opens a new pathway for faster and more streamlined acquisition of critical equipment, particularly in logistics and support roles.

The procurement of telescopic handlers is expected to enhance the Army’s material handling and logistics capabilities across varied operational environments, including high-altitude and field areas.

Beyond operational benefits, the development also reinforces the Government’s push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence, encouraging greater participation of domestic industry in meeting the requirements of the armed forces.

The move is likely to set a precedent for future capital procurements through GeM, strengthening efficiency, transparency, and indigenisation in India’s defence acquisition ecosystem.
