Her academic journey also included a Certificate in Media Communication from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Delhi, and management studies at the Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon. This blend of academic knowledge and military experience made her a versatile officer capable of handling diverse responsibilities.

Career in the Indian Air Force

Pooja Thakur joined the Indian Air Force in 2000 and was commissioned on 16 June 2001 into the Administrative Branch as part of the Short Service Commission. Over the years, she served in various roles related to personnel management, procurement, media relations, and public relations at Air Headquarters.

Her career spanned over a decade and a half, during which she steadily rose through the ranks to become a Wing Commander in 2014. She was known for her professionalism, leadership qualities, and ability to manage complex administrative functions within the Air Force.

Historic Moment at Rashtrapati Bhavan

The most defining moment of her career came on 25 January 2015, when she commanded the Tri-Services Guard of Honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan during the ceremonial reception of US President Barack Obama.

Leading a contingent comprising personnel from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, Wing Commander Thakur executed the ceremonial duties with precision and confidence. She issued commands during the national anthems and the 21-gun salute, and later escorted the visiting dignitary during the inspection of the guard.

This event was particularly significant as it coincided with the “Nari Shakti” theme of India’s Republic Day celebrations, highlighting the growing role of women in the armed forces. Her leadership not only broke traditional barriers but also sent a powerful message about equality and capability.

Contributions Beyond Duty

Beyond her official responsibilities, Wing Commander Thakur made notable contributions to enhancing the public image of the Indian Air Force. She was associated with initiatives such as the development of the IAF-themed video game “Guardians of the Skies,” as well as outreach activities including mobile exhibitions and awareness campaigns.

An accomplished adventurer, she was also a member of the IAF Women Skydiving Team. She began skydiving in 1999 and became the first woman officer to skydive from a microlight aircraft in 2001. Her interests extended to activities such as deep-sea diving, rafting, skiing, and paragliding, reflecting her fearless and dynamic personality.

Legal Battle and Professional Challenges

Like many Short Service Commission officers, Wing Commander Thakur faced challenges regarding the grant of Permanent Commission. In 2016, after being denied this opportunity, she approached the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) seeking justice.

In 2017, the tribunal ruled in her favour, directing her reinstatement and consideration for Permanent Commission without prejudice. The case also saw developments at higher judicial levels, including the Supreme Court, which reinforced the rights of women officers in the armed forces. These developments contributed to broader reforms in policies related to women in uniform.

Life After Retirement

After retiring from the Indian Air Force, Wing Commander Pooja Thakur transitioned into a new phase as a motivational speaker and corporate trainer. Drawing from her experiences in the military, she speaks on leadership, resilience, women’s empowerment, and personal growth.

She has delivered impactful talks on platforms such as TEDx, where she addressed themes like pushing personal limits and embracing change. Her engagements with students, professionals, and organisations continue to inspire a new generation to pursue excellence and break barriers.

Legacy and Inspiration

Wing Commander Pooja Thakur’s journey stands as a powerful example of courage, determination, and leadership. Her historic role in commanding the Tri-Services Guard of Honour remains a milestone in India’s military history and a symbol of the evolving role of women in the armed forces.

Her story continues to inspire countless young Indians, especially women, to dream big and serve the nation with pride. As a pioneer who broke stereotypes and redefined leadership, she remains a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
