The Indian Air Force has introduced a new GATE score-based entry scheme for recruitment into its Ground Duty (Technical) Branch, providing engineering graduates with an additional opportunity to join the force. The new entry mechanism will work alongside the existing Air Force Common Admission Test route.
Under the newly introduced system, candidates with valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores will be directly shortlisted for the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB). This marks a significant step towards streamlining the recruitment process for technically qualified aspirants seeking to serve in the Indian Air Force.
The move is expected to attract highly skilled engineering graduates and strengthen the technical manpower of the IAF. With modern warfare increasingly dependent on advanced technologies, aerospace systems, and network-centric operations, the Air Force is focusing on building a future-ready technical workforce capable of handling complex operational and maintenance responsibilities.
The introduction of the GATE-based entry scheme also offers greater flexibility to aspirants. Candidates can now pursue two parallel pathways for induction into the Ground Duty Technical Branch — through the AFCAT examination or via direct shortlisting based on GATE performance.
The initiative reflects the Indian Air Force’s broader push towards modernising its recruitment framework and ensuring merit-based induction of technically proficient officers to meet evolving operational requirements.
