An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1988. Over the decades, he has served the Navy with distinction across a wide spectrum of command, operational, training, acquisition and strategic staff appointments. A specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, he brings with him deep operational experience and a proven record of leadership in some of the Navy’s most important formations and platforms.

During his illustrious career, Vice Admiral Kochhar has commanded Indian Naval Ships Nashak, Vibhuti and Kirpan. He also had the distinction of serving as the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the frigate INS Trikand, a frontline warship of the Indian Navy. During his tenure, the carrier successfully completed the integration and operationalisation of its air wing, strengthening India’s maritime combat capability.

A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the Naval War College, Goa, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom, Vice Admiral Kochhar has also excelled in key policy and planning appointments at Naval Headquarters. His important staff assignments have included Joint Director at Naval Plans, Director of Staff Requirements and Principal Director DSCT, where he contributed to capability development, force planning and strategic decision-making.

On promotion to Flag Rank in 2018, he served as Assistant Controller of Carrier Projects and Assistant Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition. These appointments placed him at the centre of India’s naval modernisation efforts, particularly in the areas of aircraft carrier projects, shipbuilding and acquisition. His work in these roles contributed to the Navy’s long-term goal of building a modern, self-reliant and combat-ready maritime force.

In 2021, Vice Admiral Kochhar took over command of the Western Fleet, one of the Indian Navy’s most powerful operational formations. He later served as Commandant of the National Defence Academy, where he played a significant role in enhancing training standards and improving infrastructure at the tri-service academy that shapes future leaders of the Army, Navy and Air Force.

On 25 May 2024, he assumed charge as Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command, during a challenging security environment in the Western Maritime Theatre. In this role, he spearheaded the Command’s response to conventional and non-traditional threats along the Western Seaboard. His tenure also saw high-tempo naval operations during Operation Sindoor, reflecting the Indian Navy’s readiness and ability to respond swiftly to emerging maritime security challenges.

For his exceptional leadership and meritorious service of a very high order, Vice Admiral Kochhar was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2026. He is also a recipient of the Nau Sena Medal, further underlining his distinguished contribution to the service.

Prior to assuming charge as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Kochhar served as Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, India’s only tri-service command. In this strategically vital appointment, he played an important role in strengthening operational coordination, enhancing jointness among the three Services and reinforcing India’s security posture in the eastern Indian Ocean region.

As the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar takes over at a time when the Indian Navy is rapidly expanding its operational footprint, modernising its fleet and strengthening its role as a key maritime force in the Indo-Pacific. His vast experience in carrier operations, fleet command, warship acquisition, joint command structures and strategic planning will be crucial in guiding the Navy’s future trajectory.

Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar is married to Mrs Reyman, an artist who has worked in the fields of advertising and education. The couple is blessed with two children. Their daughter, Sabah, works as a freelance journalist, while their son, Karan, is employed at a financial consultancy firm.

With his assumption of charge as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar brings to the appointment a rare combination of operational expertise, strategic vision and institutional leadership. His distinguished service record stands as a testament to his dedication to the Indian Navy and the nation.
