In her message to the nation on the eve of the 80th Independence Day, the President recalled the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7, 2025. She paid tribute to the armed forces for their courage and said the operation demonstrated their ability to conduct precise military action against terrorism.

The President said the operation conveyed that terrorists and their supporters would face consequences for their actions regardless of where they sought to hide. Her remarks highlighted the government’s continued emphasis on countering terrorism and those providing support to terrorist networks.

Referring to India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, President Murmu described the move as a decisive step taken in the national interest, particularly in view of Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorism. She also highlighted the importance of water resources to Indian agriculture and farmers.

The President also spoke about the country’s progress in tackling Left-Wing Extremism, describing the reported end of Maoism as a major achievement. She pointed to development and greater public participation in areas that were previously affected by insurgency.

Highlighting the Bastar Olympics, President Murmu said the event witnessed participation from a large number of sportspersons and provided a platform for artists to showcase their talent. She presented it as an example of the growing integration of development, sports and community participation in regions previously affected by violence.

The President also praised India’s expanding sports ecosystem, attributing the country’s improved performance at international sporting events to initiatives such as Khelo India and increased investment in sports infrastructure and development.

Emphasising the importance of Jan Bhagidari, or public participation, President Murmu said citizen involvement remains an integral part of India’s democratic tradition. She highlighted the role of people in supporting national welfare initiatives and contributing to the country’s development.

The President further said that growing cultural pride was strengthening the country’s collective confidence. She emphasised the importance of balancing India’s heritage with its development aspirations as the nation moves forward.

Her Independence Day-eve address combined tributes to the armed forces and national security achievements with a broader message on development, public participation, sports and cultural confidence as India marked its 80th Independence Day.
