Indian Navy Petty Officer Rahul Madhwal received a memorable welcome from his family after returning home following the completion of 15 years of service in the Indian Navy. A video of the homecoming, shared online on September 1, 2026, has since attracted millions of views, with social media users appreciating the heartfelt gesture organised by his wife, Shivani Budhkoti, to honour his years of service.
As Madhwal arrived at his home, Shivani welcomed him at the entrance and took his belongings before performing traditional rituals. She applied sandalwood and rice grains to his forehead, showered him with flower petals and performed aarti to mark his return.
A ribbon had also been placed across the entrance. Madhwal was handed a pair of scissors to cut the ribbon, symbolically marking the beginning of a new chapter of his life after retiring from the Navy.
The celebrations continued inside the house, where Madhwal joined his wife and their child to cut a cake bearing the message, “Thank You Rahul.” Photographs from the family celebration were also shared online.
Rahul Madhwal joined the Indian Navy in 2011 and completed his service in 2026. He served as a Petty Officer Logistics (PO-LOG), with logistics personnel playing an important role in areas including supply, inventory, procurement and financial administration that support naval operations.
Sharing photographs of Madhwal and his awards, Shivani paid tribute to his years in uniform.
“After 15 years of dedication, discipline and sacrifice, a new chapter begins. Proud of you. Congratulations on retirement. Welcome home, my hero,” she wrote.
One of the moments that particularly caught viewers’ attention showed Madhwal, after being offered sweets during the welcome, sharing them with his wife. The gesture drew warm reactions from social media users.
Many viewers congratulated the sailor for completing 15 years of service and wished him well for the next phase of his life. The video also prompted discussions about naval personnel leaving service after completing their prescribed or eligible terms and beginning second careers outside the Armed Forces.
Beyond the decorations and traditional welcome, the homecoming highlighted the role played by military families throughout a service member’s career. Years of naval service can involve prolonged periods away from home, deployments and demanding professional responsibilities, with families sharing many of the sacrifices that come with life in uniform.
The simple family celebration has consequently resonated with viewers as a personal tribute to a sailor completing his years of service and returning home to begin a new chapter with his family.
