In a historic first for India–UK defence cooperation, three Indian Air Force (IAF) Qualified Flying Instructors (QFIs) have joined the Royal Air Force’s RAF Valley in Wales to train RAF pilots.
The deployment marks the first time Indian Air Force Qualified Flying Instructors have been posted to the United Kingdom in an instructional role, representing a significant milestone in the growing defence partnership between the two countries.
At RAF Valley, the three IAF instructors will contribute their flying and instructional expertise to the training of Royal Air Force pilots. Qualified Flying Instructors are experienced military aviators specially trained to instruct and evaluate pilots during different stages of flying training.
The initiative highlights the increasing level of professional exchange between the Indian Air Force and the Royal Air Force and is expected to contribute towards greater interoperability, exchange of operational experience and understanding of each other’s training practices.
RAF Valley, located on the island of Anglesey in Wales, is one of the Royal Air Force’s major flying training stations and plays an important role in preparing military pilots for frontline aviation roles.
The presence of Indian Air Force instructors at the British training establishment also reflects the deepening defence relationship between India and the United Kingdom, which has expanded through joint exercises, training exchanges and wider military-to-military engagement.
The landmark deployment underscores the shared commitment of the two air forces towards professional excellence and closer cooperation while adding a new dimension to the longstanding relationship between the Indian and British armed forces.
