Ramban/Jammu, September 19, 2026: Five Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were injured on Saturday after a convoy vehicle overturned on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir. Police said the driver remains in serious condition.
The accident occurred near Chamba-Seri when a BSF truck travelling from Kashmir towards Jammu, as part of a Jammu-bound convoy, went out of control and overturned. One report identified the vehicle as JK04J-0663. The precise cause has not been officially established, and further details were awaited.
The injured personnel have been identified as:
- Sub-Inspector Ghar Singh, son of Mela Ram, resident of Jammu
- Driver Shamim Ahmed, 38, son of Abdul Qayoom, resident of Karnah in Kupwara district, north Kashmir
- Constable Sunil Kumar, 35, son of Ramesh Lal, resident of Jammu
- Constable Parshtum Kumar (also reported as Purshotam Kumar), 36, son of Paratem/Pritam Chand, resident of Jammu
- Constable Chandan Yadhav (also reported as Yadav), 38, son of Ravender/Ravinder Yadav, resident of Bengal
Police stated that Shamim Ahmed’s condition was serious.
A joint rescue operation was launched immediately. Personnel of the Army, police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), local residents, and fellow BSF members evacuated the injured from the spot and shifted them to District Hospital Ramban.
Hospital authorities confirmed that all five were receiving treatment. Later assessments differed in emphasis. Some officials said four personnel were out of danger while the driver continued to receive treatment for serious injuries. Dr Mohammad Rafi, Medical Superintendent in-charge at District Hospital Ramban, was quoted as saying the injured were undergoing treatment and were out of danger, with the possibility of referral to a higher centre if required.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated proceedings. Officials said an inquiry would examine the circumstances of the mishap.
NH-44 through Ramban is a critical but demanding mountain corridor linking Jammu and the Kashmir Valley. The stretch is marked by sharp curves, steep gradients, and heavy mixed traffic of civilian and security convoys.
On the same day, a separate road accident in Doda district killed one civilian and injured others. That incident was unrelated to the BSF convoy mishap.
No official BSF statement beyond police and hospital accounts was available at the time of filing. Updates on the driver’s condition and the findings of the inquiry were awaited.
