Lieutenant General Shamsher Singh Virk has assumed the appointment of Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Capability Development & Sustenance), DCOAS (CD&S), at Army Headquarters.
Prior to taking over his new appointment, Lieutenant General Virk was serving as a Corps Commander along India’s Western Front, where he was responsible for overseeing operational preparedness and military activities in a strategically important sector.
As the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Capability Development & Sustenance), Lieutenant General Virk will oversee key capability development and sustenance initiatives of the Indian Army.
His responsibilities will include supporting the Army’s efforts to strengthen its operational capabilities, modernise equipment and ensure the long-term sustenance of systems required by formations and units across different operational environments.
The appointment comes as the Indian Army continues to focus on modernisation, technological integration and the development of capabilities suited to evolving security challenges and future warfare.

Lieutenant General Virk’s experience as a Corps Commander along the Western Front is expected to contribute to his new responsibilities at Army Headquarters, where capability development and sustainment remain important components of maintaining the force’s operational readiness.
The Indian Army announced his assumption of the appointment, highlighting that the General Officer will oversee its capability development and sustenance initiatives in his new role.
