Bhopal, November 3, 2026: IPS officer Anurag Sujania of the 2014 batch (Madhya Pradesh cadre) has submitted his resignation from the Indian Police Service, citing personal reasons, four days after being transferred from the post of Superintendent of Police, Sagar.
Sujania tendered his resignation on November 2. The state government had issued a transfer order on October 27, moving him from Sagar to the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Bhopal as Assistant Inspector General (AIG). He was replaced as Sagar SP by Sanjeev Kumar Sinha (2016 batch). The transfer formed part of a broader administrative reshuffle that also involved the Collectors and SPs of Sagar and Dewas districts.
The transfers followed the Banda hooch tragedy in Sagar district in early September 2026, in which at least 16 people were officially confirmed dead after consuming illegally manufactured poisonous liquor (suspected methanol contamination).
Sujania was overseeing the investigation into the incident at the time of his transfer. Sources within the police establishment indicated that the timing of the transfer caused discontent, though the officer formally cited personal reasons for resigning. He could not be contacted for comment.
A 2014-batch officer originally from Rajasthan and holding an MTech degree, Sujania joined the IPS on December 2, 2014, and was confirmed in service in December 2017. He has previously served as Superintendent of Police in Tikamgarh, Mandsaur, Morena, and Sagar districts, and as Sub-Divisional Officer of Police in Karera. He had been posted as Sagar SP for approximately six months prior to the recent transfer; before that, he was serving as AIG at the Police Headquarters in Bhopal.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav was scheduled to hold a meeting with senior police officials at the Police Headquarters in Bhopal on the evening of November 3, following the resignation. The resignation awaits a formal decision by the state government.
The development has drawn attention within the police administration amid ongoing probes into the spurious liquor incidents in Sagar and reports of similar cases in Dewas.
