When India is facing numerous cross-border attacks like the recent Uri attacks, the Army soldiers are still operating in combat zones with sub-standard assault rifles. The Army has for long been looking to replace its ageing rifles with a worthy successor, only to be uncomfortable for the end-users. To overcome this issue, the Indian Army has set up its own Army Design Bureau (ADB) to indigenous procurements and reduce import dependence.
Here are the points that you need to know about Army Design Bureau:
- Army Design Bureau is an independent body and will be headed by a Major General as a part of โMake in Indiaโ programme.
- ADB will provide a better understanding of the Armyโs requirements to the academia, research organisations and the industry for developing high tech defence products.
- It will function as the Armyโs interface with leading research institutions such as IITs, DRDO, academia, Defence Public Sector Units and the industry to enable them to understand and appreciate the Armyโs need.
- The design unit will have two wings.
- The first wing containing technical resources will be in Delhi.
- The second wing which is a simulation, innovation and design wing will be in Secunderabad, a hub of defence research industry.
- The Army Design Bureau is being set up almost after 50 years when the Indian Navy established the Naval Design Bureau (NDB).
