10 Key Points about LCU L-57 Ship Inducted In Indian Navy

The arms and weapon are being inducted frequently in Indian Navy as compared to the Army or Air force. Scorpene submarines, INS Kolkata, INS Chennai and many other in the sequence have been inducted recently in Indian navy. Recently the seventh Landing Craft Utility ship LCU โ€“ 57 for Indian navy has been launched. The cost of each ship in this series will cost Rs. 230 Cr. Some key points about the Vessel are:-

  1. The ship was launched by Bina Bhamre, wife of Minister of State for Defence Subhash Ramrao Bhamre, as there is a tradition of launching the ship by a woman.
  2. It is the largest ship of its kind in the world.
  3. It is the seventh ship in the series of LCU built by GRSE Garden Reach Shipbuilders And Engineers Ltd.
  4. It can run at a speed of 15 knots and has a range of 1500 nautical miles.
  5. It can perform multiple operations like relief operation, evacuation form islands and beaching operations.
  6. The special amphibious function of it is, it can perform better in the joint operations of Indian navy and army on remote islands.
  7. It is best for protection of Remote Island like Lakshadweep or Andaman & Nicobar.
  8. It has a carrying capacity of 2 tanks or 4 special vehicles and about 160 Army troops at any site.
  9. A total of 8 ships will be there in the series of LCU.
  10. The ships will have 90% indigenous parts in it.

Conclusion โ€“ GRSE has launched the landing craft utility ship at the time when India needs to stay ready for any hard step at the key territories. Earlier, GRSE has delivered fast attack craft โ€œTihayuโ€ to the navy. The commissioning of variety of vessels, ships, etc. has raised the signal of a strong and bold navy. LCU will be a game changer due to its transportation and carrying capability and all ships in this series will raise the efficiency of the Indian navy.
