The operation, executed by an ICG Fast Patrol Vessel and an Interceptor Boat, resulted in the seizure of a substantial cache of illicit diesel and unaccounted cash.

The ICG’s swift action followed intelligence reports suggesting the involvement of the vessel in illegal activities. Upon interception, the Aai Tuljai was subjected to a thorough search, revealing approximately 30,000 litres of illicit diesel hidden within its fish holds.

The contraband, with an estimated market value of Rs 30 lakh, was intended for sale to unsuspecting fishermen. Additionally, Rs 1.75 lakh in unaccounted cash was found on board.

The apprehended crew members, whose identities have not been disclosed, were interrogated on-site. Their confessions indicated a well-organized operation aimed at peddling illicit diesel to fishermen, circumventing legal channels and contributing to the black market.

Following the seizure, the Aai Tuljai was escorted by the ICG Interceptor Boat to Mumbai harbour. There, the vessel and its crew were handed over to the authorities of the Department of Customs for further investigation and legal proceedings.

The operation has also involved other Coastal Security Agencies, including the Police, Fisheries Department, and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, to ensure a comprehensive crackdown on this maritime menace.

Commenting on the operation, an ICG spokesperson emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance along the coast. “This successful apprehension underscores our commitment to securing India’s maritime borders and curbing illegal activities at sea.

We will continue to work closely with other agencies to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety and security of our maritime domain.”

The Department of Customs has initiated an in-depth investigation to trace the origins of the illicit diesel and uncover the network behind this smuggling operation. The involvement of multiple agencies highlights the collaborative effort required to tackle complex maritime crimes effectively.

This operation is part of a broader initiative by the Indian Coast Guard and other maritime agencies to strengthen coastal security and prevent illegal activities, including smuggling and unauthorized fishing. With increased patrols and advanced surveillance techniques, the ICG aims to deter and detect any suspicious activities in India’s territorial waters.

The successful apprehension of the Aai Tuljai serves as a stern warning to those engaged in illegal maritime operations. It reaffirms the ICG’s resolve to protect India’s maritime interests and ensure the lawful use of the country’s marine resources.
