Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to deliver the first Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A fighter aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF) by July 2024, following a brief delay due to technical reasons. Initially scheduled for delivery in February-March, the handover was postponed to ensure all integration trials and technical evaluations were thoroughly completed.

Defence officials speaking to ANI confirmed the revised timeline after a recent review of the LCA fighter project by the IAF and HAL. “The Indian Air Force and the public sector HAL have recently reviewed the LCA fighter project, and it is now expected to be delivered to the force by July this year,” stated the officials.

HAL successfully conducted the first flight of the indigenous fighter last month. Additional integration trials are currently underway and are expected to be completed in the coming weeks. These trials are crucial to ensure the aircraft meets all operational requirements before its induction into the IAF fleet.

The induction of the LCA Mark 1A into the IAF’s fleet marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in the defense sector. This project, initiated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, reflects the government’s commitment to boosting indigenization in military hardware. To commemorate this event, it is anticipated that Prime Minister Modi may be invited to the delivery ceremony.

The LCA Mark 1A project has already secured an order worth Rs 48,000 crore for 83 aircraft. In a move that further underscores the project’s importance, an additional order for 97 planes, expected to be worth Rs 65,000 crore, is likely to be placed by the end of this financial year.

This substantial order is part of a broader strategy to replace the aging fleet of MiG-21s, MiG-23s, and MiG-27s, which have either been phased out or are scheduled for phase-out soon.

The Defence Ministry has issued a tender to HAL for the purchase of 97 made-in-India LCA Mark 1A fighter jets. This tender represents the largest order for indigenous military hardware ever placed by the Indian government, with HAL given a three-month timeframe to respond.

Officials highlighted that the indigenous fighter aircraft program is fully backed by the Defence Ministry and Air Headquarters. “This program aims to promote indigenization and give a significant boost to small and medium enterprises engaged in the defense sector across the country,” they said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a staunch advocate for the revival of HAL. Under his government, HAL has secured orders for various indigenous fighter aircraft and helicopters, along with their engines. Notably, Prime Minister Modi undertook a sortie in the trainer variant of the indigenous fighter, marking the first-ever sortie by an Indian Prime Minister in a combat aircraft.

Speaking to ANI from Spain, Indian Air Force Chief VR Chaudhari announced the plan to acquire 97 more LCA Mark 1A fighter jets, emphasizing the ambitious plans to boost indigenous fighter aircraft orders.

This announcement underscores India’s focus on strengthening its defense capabilities through domestic production, reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.

The delivery of the first LCA Mark 1A fighter aircraft by HAL to the IAF this July is a landmark event in India’s defense sector. It highlights the nation’s strides towards self-reliance and the government’s robust support for indigenization.

As India continues to bolster its military capabilities with homegrown technology, the LCA Mark 1A stands as a testament to the country’s engineering prowess and strategic foresight.
