MOSCOW – North Korea’s Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui declared unwavering support for Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, stating that Pyongyang will stand by its Russian allies until "victory day." Choe’s comments came during her visit to Moscow, where U.S. officials have expressed concerns over the potential deployment of thousands of North Korean troops to aid Russian forces in the conflict.

U.S. intelligence estimates suggest that up to 10,000 North Korean soldiers may be on the verge of joining the fight, with reports indicating that some have already arrived in Russia’s Kursk border region. The United States, alongside South Korea, has urged North Korea to reconsider its military involvement.

After discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Choe praised the Kremlin’s military strategy in Ukraine, describing it as a “sacred struggle.” Choe emphasized North Korea’s commitment to advance its nuclear capabilities and hinted at potential exchanges of military assistance for Russian nuclear technology.

Neither Choe nor Lavrov addressed the troop deployment directly, but Lavrov noted the "very close ties" between the two nations’ military forces, emphasizing the strategic partnership between their armies.

Lavrov expressed gratitude for North Korea’s “principled stance” on the Ukraine crisis, as the two countries have grown increasingly aligned in their opposition to Western influence. In a symbolic gesture, they unveiled a plaque commemorating North Korean leader Kim Il Sung’s historic visit to Moscow in 1949, reinforcing the camaraderie between the countries that harkens back to Soviet-era alliances.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that North Korean troops could soon be deployed in Ukraine but confirmed no such movement had been observed yet. Meanwhile, the U.S. has announced an additional $425 million in military aid to Ukraine, aimed at enhancing its defense capabilities as the conflict escalates.

In a separate statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the West for its perceived inaction in responding to Russia’s aggression and the looming North Korean involvement. He remarked on the heightened urgency to secure long-range strike capabilities to neutralize the emerging threat posed by North Korean forces stationed in Russia.

Choe’s visit to Moscow follows North Korea’s recent missile tests, which drew international condemnation. She accused Western nations of exacerbating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, warning that the situation could become "explosive" at any moment.

As North Korea and Russia draw closer in their military collaboration, South Korea has expressed concern over potential escalations in security threats, especially given North Korea’s desire for advanced weaponry and technology transfers from Russia. With the ongoing conflict and shifting alliances, the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve rapidly, raising alarms about potential ramifications for global security.
