Indian Army Engages in Gunfire with Armed Miscreants in Manipur

Heavy Gunfire Exchange in Manipur’s Imphal East and Kangpokpi Districts

Imphal, Manipur – A serious gun battle erupted on Wednesday between the Indian Army and armed miscreants in villages along the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts. The clash began around 11:45 am in the areas of Itham Moirangpurel and Laihong, under the jurisdiction of the Maphou Dam police station.

The encounter is particularly significant given the historical tensions between the local Meitei community in Imphal East and the Kuki community in Kangpokpi, which has escalated into a conflict lasting over 18 months and resulting in the deaths of at least 232 individuals.

Reports indicate that the confrontation commenced when armed miscreants opened fire from the high Sarang hill range in Kangpokpi, targeting low-lying residential areas in Itham Moirangpurel and Laihong. In response, the Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army, stationed along the border, initially fired warning shots to deter further attacks. As the armed engagement intensified with ongoing fire from the miscreants, the Army escalated their response by sounding a siren followed by the use of heavier firepower, including bombs.

Despite the severity of the exchange, there have been no reported casualties on either side thus far. Authorities indicate that while tensions remain high in the area, the situation is currently under control.

This incident highlights the ongoing volatility in the region, which has been plagued by communal strife and violence over the past year and a half. Situation updates will continue to be monitored as local authorities work to maintain peace and security in the affected areas.
