Russia Destroys 34 Ukrainian Drones in Major Attack on Moscow

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russiaโ€™s defense ministry reported that it intercepted and downed 34 Ukrainian drones that were aimed at Moscow. This incident marks the largest drone attack on the Russian capital since the onset of its military operations in Ukraine in 2022. The attack led to the temporary shutdown of three airports around the city, with local officials confirming injuries to a 52-year-old woman and damage caused by fires at two homes in the village of Stanovoye, located in the surrounding Moscow region.

Typically, while Kyiv has endured frequent and severe drone and missile assaults from Russia, attacks targeting Moscow are considerably rarer. The defense ministry revealed that, during the early hours from 0400 GMT to 0700 GMT, Russiaโ€™s air defenses successfully intercepted a total of 70 Ukrainian drones across six regions, with 34 intercepted in the Moscow area alone. The remaining drones were downed over other regions including Bryansk, Orlov, Kaluga, Tula, and Kursk.

Local officials indicated that the drones were destroyed in several districts of the Moscow region, specifically Ramenskoye, Kolomna, and Domodedovo. Footage circulated by Russian media depicted a burning structure in the Ramenskoye district, serving as a stark reminder of the attackโ€™s impact. This recent incident follows a notable drone assault in September, during which a woman was killed in Ramenskoye, marking a rare instance of casualties resulting from an attack near the capital.

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov characterized the drone assault as โ€œmassive,โ€ providing details on the injured woman who required hospitalization due to burns. Concurrently, the defense ministry disclosed that 23 additional Ukrainian drones had been neutralized over several other border regions, including Bryansk, Rostov, Belgorod, and Kursk, where drone strikes have become more commonplace. Furthermore, Andrei Klychkov, the governor of Orlov region, noted that air defense systems there successfully shot down 10 drones, confirming no casualties within his jurisdiction.

Ukrainian officials attribute these targeted attacks on Russian territory to retaliation for ongoing bombings of their cities since the conflictโ€™s escalation in February 2022. In a recent wave of aggression, Russian airstrikes over Ukraine led to casualties, including one death and dozens of injuries from bombardments that occurred late last week. Reports indicated that the Russian military launched a barrage of five missiles and 92 drones, alongside glide bombs, resulting in 62 drones being downed during the counter-responses by Ukrainian forces.
